Explain how the arts, as we have studied them this semester, have affected your 'values.' How have you grown? What new things do you notice? How has this new perception changed your view of life?
How does studying the Humanities help solve the problems society faces? Problems like global warming, religious differences--toleration/intoleration, terrorism, the lack of accountability of multi-national corporations, etc.

Prior to this class, I did not have time for art, sculpture, paintings etc. I didn't see the value in these items. I am embarassed to say, that I felt they were a waste of time and resources. After studying these expressions I can say that I have found myself more aware of my surroundings. I appreciate the outdoor sculpture in my community. I wonder about the meaning behind paintings and pictures. I aprpeciate my child's photography. I have always been so single minded and focused. I can say that I now "stop and smell the roses" so to speak. I have forced myself to notice, slow down and appreciate my surroundings. They do give each day that little extra. Will I become an artist? Probably not, I am a musician but I cannot draw stick figures. But I now have a new found appreciation for those who can paint, draw etc. As far as globally, art can give us insight into the feelings and culture and values of another nation. It transends language and political barriers.
Before taking this class I did not look at objects like I do now. Now since studying the arts in this class I take the time to look at them and consider who made them or where they were created. I also wonder what the artist was thinking or feeling while created the art piece. Also now I notice pieces that I would not have noticed before. I look small or hidden pieces. I appreciate the art more now after taking the class.
Studying the humanities helps people to understand more where people are coming from. I also feel that by studying humanities people tolerate others better. They try to look at where the person is coming from and what they are trying to say.
Before taking this class I really didn’t look too much at art. I liked looking at photographs but that is about it. Art never interested me very much but I think that might be because I didn’t know about it. Now when I look at art I look more at the details of it. What it is made of, and what makes up the piece. I think that people should really get to know art. It is a simple wonder that can mean and show so much about anything. I think that art really shows about people. It shows what people like and what they believe in, and also what interests them. I think that is class was very good at showing me art and how to analyze art.
In answering the questions that are with this lesson it captured how much we have exposed ourselves to with a new understanding of our values, how much it has given us in growth of art, all the new things that are more noticeable, and how much it has changed our lives.
I feel that it has helped me have a new way of thinking and value to all that we have learned in this class. I understand better the artists' passion that they show through the art work in the examples we had in the book. The value of the facts that we were shown in the chapters, and the process that is used in each catergory of art and humanities. I was thrilled to learn what some of the processes were, because often there can be conversation about it from others but you are not really sure what the true process is and this helped understand that.
I feel I have grown in this class and I am enlighten by all the good information. I can understand the passion each artist has for their individual talent which I'm not sure that I really would not have understood without having taken this class. I have felt like I see things differently in the library and art gallery I visited last week. There was a special on television last night about Michelangelo Buonarroti I had to watch it and what great view points that it had about his daring work, at least was some of the information. I enjoyed more than I would have before I took the class, a person is not always sure how to enjoy or what to enjoy from art. It all seems impressive but I really understood the language better and view points that are talked about. I think any age could enjoy this class and it really enhance our education in many ways. My view point is to be more open with all that is around me and to take time enjoy all of it.
In response to heidimccormik: You hit some very good points with your comments. I also feel a person needs to take time to really look around and see things that we have in our communities. What a great class and so much more to learn. It has been fun communicating with everyone on the Blog and hearing such great view points that each of person has. Good Luck to everyone with life and further education.
Throughout this semester I have learned to look at the ordinary things in a much more extraordinary way. Little things that I had seen many, many times before, I found myself looking at them in a whole different way. I try not to take things for granted anymore, and I often find myself analyzing peoples decorations in their home. I wonder if that is art to them, or if they see what I do. I see many things as art that I previously did not, and I greatly appreciate that new outlook. I believe that this class has taught me to slow down, and apprecaite new cultures, arts and others way of thinking and seeing things!
In response to krolfes~
I to obelieve that people do not slow down and take the time to appreciate art, or never really put more thought into it then they have before! I sure enjoy my new outlook on art!
Before I took this class, i really had no interest in art. Mostly because it just didnt make sense to me. When reading the first chapter it only confirmed that thought because i didnt understand anything they were trying to tell me about art. I thought i wasnt going to get anythign out of this class, but now as i look back i realize that i have learned alot. Before, i would just look at pieces of art and quickly decide if i liked them or not because of how they looked, but now whenever i look at somthing i take more time to really look at it and find all the elemetns that make it up. Art makes alot more sense to me now that i have been educated on how to spot these little things that really make it a piece of art.
I also never realized how important a role humanities through art plays on society and around the world. How different types of art test our everyday values and the values of other cultures and religions everywhere. Even people in different job field have different values they feel strongly about. I really didnt think i learned much in this class, but after writing our final paper and reviewing it i realized that i have learned SO much i didnt even know i did.
Before taking this class i always enjoyed looking at art but didnt really understand it. Nor did i look at other things being art. When people say art you immedately thing piture or sculpture but really art is so many different things. I would have to say that if it wouldnt have been for this class i wont take the time to go look at the art museum, go to a musical or even sit and read a book like it did for this class. I am glad that i do understand and appreciate art alot more then i did coming into this class.
Wow, the humanities are amazing. If anything, the most that they have done for me in this semester as been encourage me to look and consider things in a deeper light. I have also developed a greater sense and appreciation of art and works that are art like. I think the humanitarian arts are necessary for society because they provide them an outlet to make their emotions and feelings known. Instead of holding them inside, people can use the humanities and a way to share what they think. I can guarentee you one thing... the next I see soemthing that even looks odd, I will be much more cautious before dismissing it as "not being a piece of art." After all, this semester has shown me that the humanities are incredibly broad and encompass a large variety of artistic forms.
Now after this class I have new place in my soul for art an I learnt some things that I never knew. It is amazing how much the arts have an impact on our lives. Now I can’t image living without paintings and music or even movies. There is so much to learn and how everything came about to be.
I look through the text book and look at the art in it and wonder how the artist got the idea to make such a thing. They have true vision to make such great works of art! Everyone going out to be an artist best of luck but I’ll bet you’ll do fine after this class. I can’t imagine what the world was like without art. It must have been awfully dull!
It is amazing to know that everywhere we got you see art of some type. Whether it is music, painting, architecture, or even dance. So as you can see art is also the center of our soul it is somewhere in us we just need to set it free.
Though I never knew that a work of art is something with the human body or just the human image. That is so weird. But also very amazing. There are a lot of works of art out there and some are still waiting to be created. But that is what our generation is here for! You artist are the next best things in the world ready to set your hearts out on a new creation. Something never before seen! It sounds absolutely wonderful! And I hope all of you had the same experience from this class! Because this was an amazing class which opened my eyes to true art and how determine what is art and what is not art!

that's great that you've always liked art i never realy noticed but now you can understand it to great job have fun pursueing your education
I feel the same as many of my classmates. Before this class, I never took any time to look around me. Art to me was an hour a week class that I took 1st – 6th grade where I molded things from clay and learned to draw a picture of angled homes and streets. Now my belief is that art is whatever I want it to be. It could be the sheet my school-agers painted in celebration of our day-care center’s opening and Flag Day. Or maybe the works of art were the friendships the kids made while working together. The books I read to get away from my day to day, the music the sooths me, and my friends and family are art to me. Now, whatever gives me meaning is art. As far as the issues facing today’s society, I agree with Heidi. Through art we have a way of becoming familiar with cultures and beliefs which is the first step towards understanding each other.
I think this class has enabled me to appreciate the finer aspects of art. I enjoy looking at art more now than I did prior to this class for the sheer fact that I can interpret my surrounds as I see them. I have become more aware of my surrounds and have stoped to enjoy them. Not only do I appreciate art more, but my I also appreciate life more. Small simple things that make you think about more than just the obvious make you appreciate them. We need to focus more on humanities as a society in order to free our minds and enjoy the simple things.
It's been fun talking to everyone and reading your inputs!
in response to Renee's first post
I couldn't agree more with you, Renee. You definitely hit the nail on the head. We have opened ourselves up for deeper understanding of the arts, etc. I too spend much more time considering what the artist was thinking and what they were hoping to accomplish with their art. When you actually take the time, almost anything can be seen as a piece of art in one way or another! Amazing - we're surrounded by it!
Before I had entered this class I really didnt think about art in all different forms I just looked at it as Pretty or Ugly, Black, or White. I now see that you can get art out of anything in life and see things differently. Wanting to learn more about preception. Art really wasnt "my thing" before and now I see that I have taken a bigger interest into it and respect it way more then I did before this class.
I love the way everyone is precieving this class. The explanations that people are putting are the exact same way that I see it also. Heidi but it right with the way she said that the way she did think to the way she thinks now, thats how I thought and felt from now and then
Before taking this class, I hated art just because I am not good at it. In high school I thought it was a fun class I just had no talent. I have learned so much about art and what it is all about and I am greatful that I have more knowledge in this area. Art still doesn't interest me that much unless I am looking for something to hang on my wall. I am not one you will find in an art gallery though unless it is for any class project or paper. I do love dance though and I wish we had more stuff like that around our area. I am an hour and ten minutes north of Grand Frorks so there isn't much up there except for kids dancing at half time! I did learn that there is more to art than a picture much as films, television, dance, and so on.
I agree with ashleylynn when she says that when she looked at art it was pretty or ugly!
The biggest change for me is an "awakening" to art. Across the board I really had very little time for art until I took this course. Now I am looking at art in a new light. Paintings have changed from being decoration to something I can experience. My thinking and views of what is art and what isn't have changed. It's still a stretch for me to really appreciate abstract art, but I do see it's value in focusing on our sensed to participate in it.
Art can also be used to emphasize a point or expose something that the world needs to see. It is a way to help bring understanding to some of the difficult issues facing our society. People might not read a newspaper article on a topic they aren't interested in but art can be used to express an opinion that otherwise might go unnoticed. We can also study art and gain an understanding in to the artist and then take a deeper look at the culture that may have shaped their world and given them the reason to create the art. Although I might not appreciate every work of art I see, I can appreciate it's value to our society.
Dan
Dan - I agree. When earlier I had very little time for art,now I have much more. To be honest though, it's not that I've gained more time, it's just that I've made more time for it. It's amazing how much you can learn about a person and who they are just from looking at a piece of thier artwork. I love to draw... especially with pencil and charcoal. Within that realm of art there are many of things you can tell about the artist simply by looking at how hard they pressed their pencil or by what they drew. All art forms are a lot like this. You just have to take the time to notice these little details. Great semester, all!
I agree with everyone here! Before this class I thought of art as paintings and pottery. As Dan said it is truely and "awakening". I have a new found appreciation for the arts. If this class had not suggested for me to see a ballet I would have missed out on one of the best experiences. I loved it! I can say I never would have gone unless it was an assignment. Just to be able to appreciate and understand (not always)different forms of art has "broadened my horizons". I think that if everyone had the chance to look at the arts (like in this class) and appreciate them that there would be less confict in the world, having an open mind to different ways of expression is a way to bring people to an understanding of where you are coming from.
In response to heidi~
I agree with your statment that art can give us the insight we need to discover the feelings and relations of other countries and nations. This is what the humanities is all about, understanding other people, having an open mind and allowing yourself to appreciate anothers point of view or interest.
Prior to this class, I did not think about art. I liked certain pieces of art, but never took the time to appreciate it. I also found time to place other things before it. I also said that art was something that was not for me, because I placed art as paintings and drawings. I believe that from this class I have grown as a person; my values have changed on the way that I perceive things. I see art in everything, from a flower in nature to an old building that is standing alone in a field. I feel as if everything has a story to share. I feel that look at not only art, but life in general with an open mind. There are not words to describe the lessons that I have learned, and in a sense were life changing. I believe that if more people could place and look at the world in a sense of art; maybe there would not be so many problems around, such as global warming. If more people could open their eyes to the beauty and art around them, see how we, as a society is ruining it, we could fix it. Who wants to intestinally ruin a masterpiece? The beauty is breathing taking when you take the time to really see it.
in response to aschwartz....
I would have to agree with you, I did not like art simply, because I was not good at it. I too found that I learned about art as more then a painting, or drawing. I feel that before this class there was no way you would have seen me in an art museum, but now I enjoy it. In fact I have gone to a couple just to go.
