Week 6--Architecture

This week, using what you've learned from painting, sculpture, and architecture, describe your dream house. How many rooms, floors, what it's made of, where it's located, etc.

I actually owned my dream home. It was a 16 x 20 cabin on a lake in Oklahoma. It had two rooms, a kitchen with a wood burning cookstove, table, hoosier cabinet, fridge, and sink with only cold running water. There was a bathroom with a sink and toilet, no shower. The front porch was a combination bedroom/living room. It had old shag carpet (not a good idea).

The interior was all knotty pine paneling on the walls and ceiling. There was electricity for the air conditioner and lights. We also used a small space heater until the cookstove warmed up the room.

It was cozy and simple. There wasn't really enough room to live there, unless I wanted to get rid of 99.9% of my possessions, which has been tempting more than once, but my quest for simplicity, as usual, fails. I still have my toys though.

Please feel free to make your descriptions more detailed. I forgot to mention the cabin was painted red and had cedar shingles on the roof, at least the part you could see. Most of it was covered with moss.

It's your dream, dream well.

My dream home! WOW! Well it would have to be on a lake with a beautiful landscaped shoreline. I would have a rock wall of many types of stones with tiers. In the teirs would be flower beds. Sandy beach that sloped out slowly so the kids could play in the water without it getting too deep. No weeds of course. There would be a hot tub outside that overlooked the lake. The house itself would be made of logs with large windows. The the roof would be A framed which would create a perfect loft inside. The loft would be a master bedroom with a fireplace and large bath. The bath would have a walk in shower with several shower heads. The interior wood would match the outer log cabin feel. The edge of the loft would have a wood rail. The main level would be spacious it would have a greatroom with a central fireplace open on both sides that seperated it from the kitchen so that the fire could be ejoyed from each space. The greatroom would face the lake. There would be a large deck off the greatroom and the deck would be half screened porch and half open. There would be steps off the deck to the patio's below. There would be a half bath on this level. A half of flight of staris down from the greatroom/ kitchen level would be a formal living room. This would be on the ground floor level. This would be on the opposite side of the lake. This room would have a grand piano. The piano would be somewhat out of place in the cabin feel of the home but is a must if it is my dream. There would be a guest bath on this level. A half of flight down would be a rec room and 4 large bedrooms. The rec room would have a fire place and pool table. This level would also have an exercise room with weights, treadmill etc. There would be a guest bathroom on this level large enough to accomodate the changing needs of swimming guests. This level would have a walk out to the lake side. Each bedroom would have its own full bath. The walk out area would have a patio. The patio would have a built in barbaque and fire pit. The whole home would have a cabin feel. There would be bears, moose, plants, egals etc for decoration. There would also be a native american flair to the interior. The floors would be wood with many spacious rugs. This home can be anywhere where there are no mosquitos! Where it does not get to be 105 degrees and it does not get to be too cold for human life such as today in Bemidji Mn. There would be outbuildings for the fishing equipment and boats and toys. I could go on and on and on. Sounds like heaven to me.

Wow Heidi! Based on your description, your dream home sound VERY homey!!! In fact, it's not too far from what I would envision mine as being. Great description of the wood, loft, etc. I can almost imagine sitting in front of the fire place on a cold winters day sipping hot chocolate and making smores. I can almost see the mousse, elk, etc. I loved it!

My dream house is a very large home. I want to have a master suit bedroom with a suit retreat for a bathroom. For those who do not know what a suit retreat is it is a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub with windows on two sides surrounding the tub with shutters. There is a stand up shower with glass walls and a nice large shower head. There is a fireplace along with a spot for a television in the bathroom. (I know who needs a television in their bathroom right.) There are duel sinks so my husband and I can have our own. There would be a large walk in closet in the bedroom. Now for the rest of the house I would like to have an additional four to five bedrooms and two additional baths. I want a nice size laundry room with an entrance so when someone comes home with dirty cloths they can just come in that door and throw their cloths in the wash and not track it all over the house. I would like to have a formal living room and a family room as well. I would also like a very large kitchen with metal appliances, granite counter tops, an island, and lots of cupboard space that are a dark wood. I want a nice large window in the kitchen with a bench seat in front of it for the kids to sit on. I want a formal dinning room with a large table and a not so formal dinning area for everyday use. The floors through out the house would vary with tile in the kitchen and dinning areas. The living room and family room would wooden. The bedrooms would all be carpeted and the bathrooms would be tiled like the kitchen with a possible different color. My dream house would also have a guest house in the back for family to stay when they come and visit for longer periods of time. I want a large yard with beautiful landscaping. I want to have a fenced in back yard so the children and dogs have a safe space to run in and play. My dream house would be located in the country out side of a larger town or city. I know this seems like a lot but it is a dream house right.

My dream house is a big two-story house with a basement. The foundation of the house is cement but the rest of the house is brick.
It is located in Montana by a shimmering, blue lake and mountains and badlands as far as the eye can see. It will be a farm house. With two horses, a couple miniature goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, and of course a cat and a dog. Also a barn for all of them to live in.
My house will be a ten room. With a living room, three bedrooms, a kitchen, a workout room, and a study. My study and workout room will be in the basement.
The study is a room with bookshelves, books, a computer, desk, office chair, and a fireplace. Also in the study is my mounted animals from hunting.
The workout room will have an exercise bike, a treadmill, weight lifting set, fencing space, and a hot tub.
The main floor will consist of the kitchen, living room, master bedroom, and restroom with the washer and the dryer. So pretty much everyone knows what a kitchen, bedroom, and restroom have, but living rooms can differ from person to person.
Mine will have three chairs, one couch, an entertainment center, a couple end tables, and a coffee table.
So my other two bedrooms, one other restroom and a comfort room are on the second floor.
My comfort room is a big room. With three reclining chairs and two of the most comfortable couches. Also has a stereo, an another fireplace, and creative activity, equipment, like painting canvas, brain teasers, crosswords, and word searches.
The idea may keep changing through the years, but I think I have plenty of time to think about my dream house and it will change just as I do!

well, I was going to post my Dream Home, but it'n not the right kind of document to open on this computer. :)

Anyway, Vanessa... great description! I liked the whole suite bathroom! Man, you would definitely be living in "style," but hey... who doesn't want that every once and a while?! It sounds like a much more modern home than mine would be, but it was still interestend to say the least!!! Wow... a guest house too! That's awesome! I liked it. :)

My dream home will be in the country of North Eastern North Dakota. It would be a house on a hill so when you look at the front it looks like a ranch home with 0.4 treated lumbar deck that goes all the way across the front of the house with the roof coming down over it. On the end where the garage isn't attached there would be a cement stairway all the way down to the bottom of the hill where the house would be out of the hill so when you look at it from the backside it looks like a two story house. The cement walkway would then continue until there would be French doors opening up onto a cement deck with an outdoor hot tube on it. The siding would be tan with hunter green trim. When you see the house from the front you would see the garage because the house would make a greater than 90 degree angle from away from the garage. There would be a big Mortin building that matches the house for all the toys we would need and a work area for the boys. The toys are another story. When you walk in through the 3 stall garage you walk into the kitchen. Off from the kitchen there is a full bathroom and laundry room to the right. When you walk through the kitchen you would go to the dining room that is open to the living room. In the living room there is a stair way to the basement. If you continue walk from the living room you see a door to the right that goes out onto the front deck. If you don't go to the right you would go straight to a hall way there you would turn left down a hallway (there is a left and right hallway) to the bathroom and linen closet, on right on of that hallway would be a bedroom, if you go the other direction down the hallway there would be an office to the right, and a master bedroom to the left. In the master bedroom there would be a spiral staircase that goes up into a get away room with a couch, fire place, and a big window that over looked the country side. If we go back to the living to go into the basement at the bottom of the stairs to left a room that has the furnace, hot water heater, big deep freeze, water softener, and shelving for storage. If you go to the left you have a big open room with cedar on the walls so it looks like a cabin. A big screen tv, couch, love seat, and two recliners. In the middle of the room is the French doors that go outside to the hot tube. On the opposite wall there is full bathroom and after the bathroom are two bedrooms on the same wall. At the end of the big room is a big open area where I could do crafts and exercise. All the rooms up stairs have sheet rock with different colors in every room. The kitchen and dining room has hard wood floors and so does the laundry/bathrooms. The living room has carpet same with the hallways and all the bedrooms. Down stairs the living room area has a big area rug but the rest is all hard wood flooring except the bedrooms that have carpet and the furnace room has no floor but the cement. All in all, there are 4 bedrooms, an office, 4 full bathrooms, 2 living rooms, a dining room, a recreational area, and 2 beautiful decks. What a dream

I love the that you want to live in Montana in the country on a farm. I would love to live the moutains but there is no way I could move from ND. I love it here. I really like the way you described your house as well. I think I would love your house.

Response to Natalie B & ASchwartz regarding Montana and North Dakota. Don't take this seriously, ASchwartz, but have you ever been to Montana? How can you compare the "Big Sky Country" to North Dakota? :) But seriously, now, I have always loved & missed living in the country. I now have a small house in a rather run-down neighborhood, and miss the days of growing up in Northern MN. Both of your descriptions of your dream homes make me homesick for "the good old days." I joke with you about preferring ND over MT, but right now I am in the process of selling my house that is in Northern California, two hours from Lake Tahoe, and 2 hours from San Fransisco, so I can move to the praries of Wichita, Kansas! Everyone here says I'm crazy, but I believe that our "dream home" is really what we make it. Dream big! Live big!

Dan’s Dream Home

As I was reading this week’s chapter in our textbook, I started thinking of how I would apply the ideas of architecture as art to a home I would love to build someday. Then I went online and found out that is exactly what our assignment is this week! I actually made up an elaborate plan for my dream house when I was in High School. It wasn’t for any class, just for fun, but I don’t think it has changed too much, except for more bedrooms maybe! (I have 5 kids now) But here it is.

The home would be a two story, walk-out style home, with both floors having access to outside. The main entry would be on the top floor right in the middle. After coming in the entryway, there would be a short hall-way which would end at a railing overlooking the downstairs. The railing would be along an open hall-way/balcony that would run full-length from one end of the house to the other. As you go either way down the balcony, the main bathroom and 4 bedrooms including the master bedroom and bathroom would be accessible. At each end of the balcony, a spiral staircase would lead you to the lower level. The lower level would contain a large living space with the living room, dining room, and kitchens all open to each other and open to the balcony above. In the space below the bedrooms would be a utility room area, a lower level bathroom with sauna, and additional bedroom and den/study.

An important feature about this home is the home would be facing to the southwest. The entire southwest side would be glass, angled outward from top to bottom. The glass would allow the sun to shine in to both levels, and also house a greenhouse area for all kinds of plants large and small. The main wall running end-to-end behind the balcony would be about 2 feet thick made of rock and water columns encased vertically inside it. This wall is crucial to the passive solar heating of the home, which utilizes the sun during the day to heat the stone and water and releases the heat at night. Underground at the back of the house would be additional water columns connected with plumbing and a pump to circulate the water for additional heat storage. The home would also be heated with a large fireplace. Cooling in the summer would be the reverse, pump the water from the cooler underground storage during the day, and the stone wall would cool the water at night.

Also incorporated into the home would be solar panels for heating hot water and also generating electricity. The home would be located near a stream with a small water turbine for generating electricity as well. Preferable the entire house would be self-sufficient for all its water and energy needs, and located in the country with the ability to have animals and a large garden.

In thinking of what we read in this chapter, I would say it would be an earth-rooted design, appearing to almost grow out of the ground, but the glass southern exposure would also connect this home to the sky and sun revealing our dependence on both. Exterior features would be stone and exposed log beams for the roof. I think it would be very fun to engineer and build as an architectural project, all I have to do is make a few million dollars and I am ready to get started!

In response to Dan. I have been to Big Sky Montana 3 times in life. In fact like 2 years ago was the last time. It is beautiful but North Dakota is home and as they say home is where the heart is.The mountains are awesome I would love to live there but I am a farm girl. I am not about city life and skiing and commercialized stuff. I live in Grand Forks and it is too big for me. I love to ride snowmobiling but Northern North Dakota and Minnesota has amazing trails. Where are you from?

Try to imagine a quiet spot on a hill, where there is lots of room to run around, where there are beautiful towering shade trees, and where there is a quiet lake at the base of the hill… that’s where I’d want my dream home to be. My home would be built into the hill, rather large, but homey – I hate wasted, empty space! I can imagine it having a beautiful dark-wood look to it… kinda like a rustic cabin… except my home will be equipped with every modern amenity! There will be at least two decks on the house: one facing the lake and the other by the back door. Of course, the idea of a wrap around porch is also rather intriguing! On the deck facing the lake will be a grill and perhaps a hot tub as well. The house will have three finished levels: a basement, main level, and an upstairs. The first level that you see when you walk in will be the main level. The very first room will be a mudroom with a bathroom equipped with a shower attached to it. Indeed, the next room that you will enter will be the kitchen. In the kitchen, there will be a large center island. This island will be made of oak as will be the numerous cupboards surrounding the kitchen walls. Right above the kitchen sink will be a modest sized bay window facing the lake. Directly off the kitchen will also be a dining area with a large, solid table right in the center. I can imagine this table having a dark, knotty wood look with a smooth finish. Directly behind the table, facing the lake, will be large sliding-glass doors leading to the deck. I can just imagine warm summer nights grilling on that deck with a beautiful sunset over the lake to keep you company! Also on the main level will be a sizeable family room with a river-rock fireplace. In one corner I can also imagine having a great wrap-around couch. Last but definitely not least, will be the master bedroom. I don’t want this room to be overly large, because then the homey feel will be significantly diminished. Off this bedroom will be a walk in closet and a decent sized bathroom. Now, downstairs, there will be another family room/game room with a fireplace that will overlook the lake as well. There will also be a set of sliding doors that will lead to a patio and walkway that leads to the lake. I also want some type of fitness room downstairs, complete with all the fitness equipment you could imagine. Of course, I cannot forget about the upstairs. It won’t be anything too fancy. It will have several, perhaps five or so, bedrooms and a couple bathrooms. I think it would be cool to have a small loft area (with windows that overlook the lake) at the top of the stairs that will have a small couch and perhaps TV. Throughout my house I want there to be several rustic themes – no two rooms can be the same! Of course, with kids in the upstairs bedrooms, the themes up there will be up to them (as long as they’re not too crazy)! Finally, on the lake front there will be a small sandy beach area with a wooden dock as well.

Hey Dan. I really like you rdescription of you Dream Home. It sounds like it is very practical and worth really looking at... especially with alternate energy sourses becoming more and more important, solar panel could save tons of money. About two years ago, my parents installed an outside wood boiler, and have been burning wood for heat ever since. I can't believe the money that even something like that can save... that is, once you get past the initial investment chunk!

My dream house would not be huge but it would definitely be bold. I’m not necessarily the quaint little house lover with the picket fence. I prefer more modern looks with sharp edges and less pointy roofs. I don’t really care how many bedrooms however I want a rather large master bedroom, wide open space leading to a master bath. All bedrooms would be located on the lower level, each opening to a television room with comfy couches and possible a small bar in the back corner. Upstairs would be a large kitchen with a ton of counter space, state of the art appliances as well. Also on this floor I would have many rooms dedicated to certain things. One would be for laundry, again with high efficiency machines. Another for me; it would include a large work table for scrapbooking, arts and crafts, a computer and printer to search for and create what I need and use with the children that I work with. I would love to have an actual dining room with a long table and chairs with comfortable cushions. Each room would be color coordinated. Greens and browns are my favorite colors but I would love a different color theme in each room. I would not need much paint for the walls because I want many large windows as well.

My dream house would be located on a lake with tons of trees on the foothills of the mountians. I love the outdoors. My house would have a large heated garage with lots of room for my fiance to play and have friends over. I would want a large kitchen with tons of counter space and an amazing grill. Cooking is my passion. I would also want a playroom for my daughter. Our bedrooms wouldn't need to be that big because I would want us to spend our time in the community rooms. We would need a least 3 bedrooms so we would have room for guests. I would have probably have additional rooms or a guest house because we have a lot of family. A deck would also be an essential part of my house. I've always wanted a breakfast nook with a built in bench just big enough for 4 people. I've always pictured it having yellow incorporated into for some reason. I wouldn't want any neighbors for miles. I would let my dogs run free and explore the land. Oh and walk in closets for all 3 of us. We have a lot of clothes and I hate folding clothes, so I could just hang them all up! I house would be filled with natural things. I enjoy decorating with things like branches from tress, wheat, wild grass, and really rustic things. I like the dark woods, so that would be used for all the trim and doors. The outside of the house I would want made of wood or logs, again something natural and real. I think that is the extent of the things I would have to have in my dream home. Oh Yeah one last thing a california king postrapedic bed!

When i read this weeks blog i was so excited as this is something as a hobby i use to do. I have tons of floorplans that i have done up.
My dream home. Not sure where exactly it would be located but i know that it would not be ND. So where the weather is decent year round. It would be on 1 to 2 acres of land and like on the edge of the city but not too far out. I would like it to be either a brick home or vinyl siding. The house would be 2 levels with a basement. It would be at least 8 bdrm (I have 2 kids and fiancee has 3 so we would need the rooms)and 4 bathrooms. As you walk into the front door there would be a foyer with benches on each side for you to sit. Once you get through the foyer the stairs to up or down to basement would be in front of you. On the right handside would be a small living room with a fire place and large bay window and connected to it would be an office. If you walk past the stairs there would be a large kitchen with small casual dining room off to the left. The kitchen would have tons of space. Stainless steal appliances, an island in the middle with stools at the end. The kitchen would lead out to a patio where the doors would slide into the walls so it would be all open on a nice summer day. Off the patio would be a pool, hot tub and lots of room for the kids to run and play.
On left side of the stairs would be a large formal dining room past the dining room would be a hallway which would lead you to a small tv room, bathroom, good size laundry room and 2 of the 8 bedrooms.
Going down the stairs you would enter the large family room with a toy area large screen tv, big oversized chairs and couch, a table so the family could play board games. There would also be a tv off to the side for the kids own movies or games to play. A bar with a fridge and snack bar area. There would be 2 more bedrooms with a bathroom in between them. Once you go upstairs there would be the other 3 bedrooms and a master room along with another study/play room and bathroom. The master room would be huge with a bathroom that has a jacuzzi tub, glass shower, double sinks. There would be 2 walk in closets one for each of us. There would be a door out to our own private balcany.
Most of the house would be wood flooring except bathrooms and kitchen would be tile. The bedrooms and basement would be carpet. Well here is my dream home in a nutshell.

My dream home is located on the very edge of a lake. The lake has crystal dark blue water and my home has a dock leading right to the water.

My home would be made of a medium gray colored brick, and have a large grassy yard with dogs and cats outside. There would be two large pillars leading to the front enterance that would have a double door that opened really wide. My front door would be completely stained glass. Looking at my house from the outside I would have large windows, and lots of them to take advatage of the awesome lake view. When you walk in there would be a large foyer area, with short antique pews lining both sides. To the right there will be a large kitchen with deep wood floors, matching cuboards, and granite countertops. There will be double wall mounted ovens and a large island, where my family gathers to snack and visit. Of f that room will be a formal dining room. Opposite of the kitchen I will have a large sitting area, a fireplace and overstuffed, soft couches. Off of that room would be my master bedroom, that would have a tall comfortable bed with tons of pillows and soft bedding. It would have a fireplace with a flat screened television over it. I would have a large walk in closet (that would include a window), and then I would have a master bath that would rock! It would have a large jacuzzi tub that overlooked the lake, and stained glass windows on the sides of the round top window. There would be a separate stand up shower that has total glass walls and many, many body jets and a rainfall shower head! I would have double sinks also! There would also be a nursery off of my room for the babies when they are infants.

If you walked straight when you came into the house you would go up a staircase that spit and went into two wings. To the right would be my girls’s rooms (that would have window seats, and look like fairy castles) One of their rooms would be done is soft pinks and look soft & comfortable to the eye. The other room would be done in bright, vivid colors. (This matched their differing personalities). They would also have their own private bathroom to share. If you went left on the staircase you would go to either the family room or the guest bedroom. The Guest bedroom would be done in cozy nuetral colors, with a sitting area and comfortable bed and an attatched bathroom. The family room would be spacious with toys in one area, and a large screen on the wall for movies, and it would have a very large and comfortable seating couch.

Zachrey, I can see what you ment regarding our dream houses being somewhat similar. I think I would feel quite comfortable in your home. I like the idea of a wrap around deck and a mudroom to keep things clean. Now if we could just figure out where to put these houses to avoid mosquito's

Well this will sound a little odd but I'm a girl who likes to be alone and I also like to have my privacy. So, if I'm were to build my dream house, I would probably build it on top of a high mountain miles upon miles away from civilization and have it over looking a beautiful forest with streams and birds singing. It would be a two story house with a basement and the bottom exterior in brick and the 2nd floor would be all glass the upstairs would be a game family room with a pool table and some work out equipment and things of that nature with a balcony that circulated the house with French doors that opened up to the beautiful scenery. The basement would be the bedrooms and the master bathroom and laundry area. The main level would be the kitchen, dining, pantry, and guest room. There would also be a connected 2 car garage connected to the kitchen. The kitchen would have all matching stainless steel appliances and marble counter tops; it would have all hardwood floors except for the 2 guest rooms. I’m into the bold colors the rich reds and royal blues and deep greens and rich browns which would be the themes for the walls and all the bedrooms would have a theme. Everything would be matching and coordinated and the cupboards would be organized and everything labeled and always kept in its proper place. The front door would be the French double door but when they’re open they’d make an archway. And when you walk into the house the stairs would be the first thing you’d see and the stairs would be a spiral staircase that would lead me both upstairs and down. And the top step would just lead up to the 2nd floors landing. I could go on and on but this would defiantly be the start of my dream home.

My dream house, I have given a lot of thought to what I'd want as I lived through a few house moves. A new home is sort something I haven't really required however an older style home with tall ceiling, old wood work, pantry, cellar, wrap around porch to the house, large dining room, grand stair case. I love the old style mansion. A large yard with a barn, chicken coop, and apple orchard. I feel such comfort with the old fashion way of life however have modern appliances, heating and plumbing would be must. Many bedrooms with bathrooms and homemade quilts in every room. Maybe consider it to be a bed and breakfast type, I love to cook and entertain family and friends. I would enjoy horses in the barn, chickens in the coop, and some wild life. I would have a large clothes line for hanging out clothes. Lots of flower beds and would not have to work out of the home so I could enjoy baking, gardening, feeding the animals, cleaning my home and relax on the wrap around porch.

My dream home would be located on river front property, and would have cedar siding with brick accents. Upon entering the house, you would be greeted with lots of natural light, as the windows above the door, leading up to the vaulted ceiling, would be letting the sun peek in. Centered in the grand enterance would be a four foot tall pillar with a huge arrangement of exotic flowers. The enterence would T-off to the hallway on the right, which lead to three bedrooms and a bathroom. To the left would be the combined openess of the living quarters and huge kitchen. The wrap around bar would give the illusion of seperation between the two. As you immediatly looked in the kitchen, the eyes would draw toward the shiny, stainless vent hood hovering over the industrial sized stove. As your eyes made there way to the living area, they would immedialty be drawn to the stone fireplace centered along the wall. Tucked away in the corner would be the door the the large master bedroom, which would be home to a master bath with limestone floors and walls. It would have a claw tub which is also a jacuzzi along with a seperate shower. From the master bath would be a walk through closet that made a loop into the bedroom again. The house would have a full sized basement which housed a game room, excersize room, and an entertaining area. Attached to the house would be a three stall, heated garage.
OH, AND IT WOULD BE PAID OFF!!

My husband and I designed the house we live in now. I really like it but, if it were a true dream house, I would have to change the location and a few other things. The house would be located in the mountains of Northern Idaho and look out over Lake Coeur d’ Alene. This is the most beautiful area that I have ever seen. The lake is a glacial reservoir and from the mountain roads it is the most breath taking scene!!
Our house is a ranch type with a three stall garage connected, there is a small porch on the front. I would change this to a full wrap around deck. The entry in the front of the house would be stained glass double doors. When you enter the large foyer, you can see the living and dining rooms the ceiling is vaulted and all open. There is a huge arched picture window that would be facing the lake through the trees. In the dining area there are french doors that open out back to the raised patio deck, used for barbecues, I would have a second level down that would include a hot tub and more patio furniture.
The kitchen is huge with black appliances and hickory cabinets and a lot of counter space. The counter comes out at an angle like a large bar and there are chairs on one side used for causal dining. Off the kitchen is the laundry room and entry from the garage, there is also a half bath located on the end of the laundry room. There are lots of cupboards and counter tops on one side the counter top goes over the top of the washer and dryer the opposite side is used for crafts and things. The other end of the house down the hall are two good sized bedrooms and a full bath.
The master bedroom is on the left at the end of the hall. It is also a good sized bedroom the master bath is huge and has a hot tub and shower. I would make the shower huge with shower heads all around and glass block to surround it.
The lower level includes an office/ exercise room a full bath and a guest room. There is a huge family/rec area with a full bar in the rear. My dream house would have a walk out basement that would lead out to the back yard and a view of the lake.

I really enjoyed reading your post. The description of your home really made me feel like I was there looking at it. Before we built our home we lived in a beautiful older home with the tall ceilings wood floors and wooden stair case. I loved it! I also like the way you decribed it as being a bed and breakfast type of setting, hand made quilts and such. It kind of made me feel like I was back on my grandparents farm with the chicken coop and horses. Thanks for stirring up those memories!!

My dream home would be located in the country on about 20 acres of land. My house would be a big 3 story lodge home, with a basement, main level, and upstairs. Both the stairway to the basement and upstairs will be open. The exterior of my home will be a dark loge color with a large patio deck attached in the front then wraps around to the side. There will also be much landscape around the house with a seasonal pool in the backyard. The interior of the house will contain one master bedroom on the upper level with a fire place, master bathroom, and walk-in closet. There will be three bedrooms on the main level all with walk in closets, and two bathrooms on the main level. There will also be two more rooms downstairs with one more bathroom. There will be one large living room with fireplace and entertainment center on the main floor. The kitchen will also be on the main floor which would be mid-size with lots of cupboard and counter space. The basement will consists of the two bedrooms, one bathroom and the rest will be a recreational area with a pool table, entertainment center, and a corner bar. The rest of upstairs will be open to do what I want with it as it is needed. Within the house there will be big windows, a mixture of hardwood floors and carpet, and a variety of different colors painted on the walls.

In response to audpod, I really liked to description of you dream house, it sounds fascinating! I liked your detailed descriptions of what you would like. I really like how the closet in your master bedrooms sounds, the one that loops around back into the room. I also like your full size basement with exercise, game, and entertainment room.

well, i'v never thought about what my dream home would be. After reading the assignment i sat a tried to think of what i would want in my dream home. I couldnt picture it exactly, but there are some details i know for sure that i want my house to have. For starters i want to live in Chicago! I always imagined living in a condo down by lake michigan, right by the beach. It would be a big spacious area with two bedrooms and one bath. My kitchen would be very modern with a island in the middle. The appliances would all be matching red. My cabinets would be made of a light colored wood. My living room would have a very plush dark brown carpet with leopard print accent rugs. My furniture would be antique style with leopard print and red upholstery. I would have a protrait of Lucille Ball somewhere in my living room (I LOVE her!). My bathroom would be a dark marble. I would have a shower with glass doors and two shower heads on either side of me. Also, I would have a jacuzzi tub. My bedroom will have a king size bed with a purple old fashion theme to it. The best part of my room will be my walk in closet! I have a rediculous amount of clothes, shoes, purses, jewelry, ect. And to finish it off, my 2 siamese cats will keep me company!

My dream home would consist of a 3 levels. The basement would be more adults only. I would like a bar, probably a dark cherry wood with cool old bar stools. I would also like it big enough to fit a 7' pool table in. In the other corner I would like two old arcade games or a pin ball machine and of course a dart board. I would also like a sofa and a nice tv to watch games, fights, movies, etc. The middle floor would consist of the kitchen, living room and a smaller bathroom without a shower. My kitchen would consist of dark granite tops with an island in the middle. I would also want a deck to lead out off the dining area and plenty of windows by the sink. I also love hardwood floors. My living room would be family friendly with a big bay window looking out to the lake (yes, I would love to live on the lake again). I would also like a fireplace. The stairs going up to the bedrooms would be carpeted with a wrap around staircase. The upstairs would consist of three bedrooms. The master bedroom would have a soft carpet, a walkout balcony and plenty of windows. I would also like to have walk-in closets for all the bedrooms. The master bath would be connected to the master bedroom and would be large. I would like two sinks with granite tops, a walk in shower and an old tub because I still like taking baths. I would like the other two bedrooms to be large with walk in closets. My driveway would be big enough to play basketball in and my yard would be big enough for the kids to play ball and not worry about cars and such. In the back of the house I would like a hot tub and a couple gardens against the house. I would like the house to be log but there is so much upkeep so I think I would go with light red tones of brick with two large columns in the doorway. I would also like a two stall garage and then a shed in the back for the shop and to park any beauties in progress. I wouldn't really care too much about where I live but ideally I would like to be close to a big city but far enough away where I could ride dirt bikes and work on cars and not worry about noise or the kids getting into trouble...maybe one day :)

In respose to Natalie B

My ideal house has changed quite a bit over the last few years but the older I get, I want less and less rooms! I also would love a brick house and to live by the lake as well. What makes you want to live in montanta, or is that where you are from origionally? Even though I would like less rooms to clean and take care of, I like your idea about a work out area. I hate going to the gym and when I do want to go I never have the time, the gas, or a babysitter to go!

I was excited when I first learned about this week’s topic. I am getting married in a year, and my fiancĂ© and I as are starting to look at houses. I asked my fiancĂ© to help me write this; so forgive me if I created on this week’s homework, but I am writing about our dream house. Our dream house would be an 1800 square two story country style home. It will have four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, with a walk out basement and a wraparound porch around the house. Attached to our home would be a two car garage, which has heated flooring. The basement will be finished as main living area; where our family can enjoy the outdoor theme and cozy up next to the fireplace at night. To entertain our guests, in the corner of part of the downstairs there is a small bar. The bar is made of knotty pine and split rocks. Also downstairs are two of the bedrooms and a bathroom. Up the stairs we can walk into the kitchen. The corners and the island are made of marble, with oak cabinets, and a huge bay widow to help showcase the nature light in our home. The master bedroom is a place where we can relax and unwind. It has a walk in closet and master bathroom connected to it. The master bath contains a whirlpool and his and her sinks. Down the hall from the mater bedroom is another small living area, where you can walk through the patio doors and on to the wrap around porch. The exterior of the home shows its country style with brick coming a quarter of the way up before meeting the tan siding, which is complimented with green shutters.

In response to bean. First of all wow, what an awesone home you have dreamed for yourself. I love too love Lucille Ball, and have always thought that if I have a bar in my home, I would do it old hollywood. Second, I love the unquie way you would design your home. I have a huge fan of playing with colors, in fact there is not a single white wall left in my home. I found the leopard print to be a bold statement. Your house sounds very hip and modern. But i do have one question- why Chicago?

Heidi - no kidding. :) That's the one thing that always seems to be a bit of a problem. Those mosquito net things never seem to work either. Well, maybe give it a few more years... with the way things progress these days, I wouldn't be surprised if something else came out!
